How to Get the “No Makeup” Makeup Look

Okay, so I know what you’re probably thinking. Why the heck would I spend time applying makeup to end up looking like I’m not wearing any?!

Push your beauty anxiety to the side! No makeup vibes are here to stay — we promise. The typical Instagram beauty looks feature bold brows, majorly contoured cheeks, full-coverage foundation, winged liner, and well, the whole nine yards. However, recently we’ve seen celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Dakota Johnson, Jessica Alba, Gisele Bündchen, and Zoë Kravitz rock the “no makeup” makeup look.

Soooo…in this blog post, #Ave42Sarah will break down the best tips and tricks for achieving this natural trend. Now, let’s focus on the steps of application and our favorite products that will get you the head turning “no makeup” makeup look with ease.

Tip #1: Exfoliate, Wash, Moisturize

The “no makeup” look is all about a glowing, dewy complexion. This is something you can’t fake — you must actually work to achieve it!

Okay, so not all of us have the clear, youthful skin of Jennifer Aniston, but that doesn’t mean we can’t indulge in a little pre-makeup skin prep. To do this, gently scrub and cleanse your face (we recommend these products, respectively: Mario Badescu’s Botanical Exfoliating Scrub and Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser).

Before applying any makeup for this look, moisturizing is KEY. Hydrate under your eyes and over your entire décolletage and face (Try Perricone MD’s Face Finishing & Firming Moisturizer). Using a hydrating face mask is also an alternative to ensure your skin is supple and glowing for this no makeup look!

Tip #2: Prime Time

Using a primer is the easiest step to get a smooth, minimalistic look. We highly recommend using an illuminating primer to give your skin that extra bit of glow and hydration.

If you have naturally dewy skin, you may want to opt for a pore-filling primer! Either way, this step is a must.

Depending on your skin type, you may like one of these primers: Color FX’s Illuminating Primer or Benefit Cosmetics’ POREfessional Face Primer.

Tip #3: Conceal to Seal the Deal

The secret to achieving the “no makeup” makeup look is going light on the coverage. If you have freckles, flaunt them with this look. BB and CC creams work particularly well in giving you that extra hydration and dew, while also allowing your freckles and “imperfections” to shine through. Apply concealer under the eyes with a makeup sponge or your fingers to create a fresh, awake, and dewy appearance.

These are our favorite natural concealing creams: Rodan + Fields’ Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (courtesy of Melanie Bianco, Skincare Consultant), Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint, and Tarte Cosmetics’ BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer, SPF 30.

Tip #4: Don’t Be Afraid to Blush

Add a bit of cream blush to your face to enhance your all-natural, effortless makeup look. Apply Smashbox’s Blendable Lip and Cheek Cream Color Stick or Glossier’s Cloud Paint to the apples of the cheeks, up onto the temples, and right on the bridge of the nose.

The key is to lightly blend a natural pink tone in with your makeup, not overdoing it with a bolder color choice for this “no makeup” look.

Tip #5: Boy Brows

Perhaps our favorite part of this look is…you guessed it, BROWS. We’re talking, bushy, unruly boy brows. #Ave42Babes, we encourage you to accept the imperfections of your skin, lashes, and brows with this look. Enhance and flaunt the beauty of your natural brow by simply sweeping the hairs slightly upward and sideways, followed by a clear brow gel with fibers to keep them in place.

If you have lighter colored brows, you can also add in a hint of brow powder before using the gel if you wish. We really love this natural powder palette by ColoreScience.

Tip #6: Simplistic Lash Game

As for your lashes, keep it simple! We recommend curling your lashes and enhancing their length with your clear brow/lash gel used earlier (can be found in the makeup department at any drug store). If you’re hoping for a little bit of tint for an evening out, try using brown mascara on your top and bottom lashes!

Your skin is the star of the show this time, so use mascara sparingly (or use none at all)!

Tip #7: Dew All Things in Love

Finally, finish off the “no makeup” makeup look with more DEW. Adding a nice dewiness/glow on top of your makeup can go a long way in making you photoshoot, work, or date ready! Not to mention, many dew sprays help to set your makeup.

Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray does the trick…trust us. This stuff is liquid gold.

So go ‘head…get your glow on, #Ave42Babes!
